Why this project came about
The Abortion Mobilization Project was founded in mid 2024, in anticipation of the election later that year. As movement workers, we have seen how in moments of crisis, activists show up in force, wanting to support, but don’t always know where or how. The goal was to create a centralized information hub that held volunteer opportunities across the movement so that people who are interested in abortion access could quickly and effectively plug into existing systems.
We are living in difficult, complicated times. Our lives and bodies are under attack in seemingly new ways every day. It can be hard to know how and where to fight back. It can even be hard to know where to focus! But as abortion access leaders and workers, to us it was clear: defend abortion.
Defending abortion is not simply about ensuring access to health care. It is about the right to bodily autonomy for all people, regardless of race, gender, sex, economic status, or any of the myriad other things that can stand in the way. Access to abortion is only one part of our collective fight, but it is one whose tendrils can reach into all corners of our communities to ensure our rights and safety are secured.
There are two key ways this project will be successful:
If it’s useful to people who want to get engaged.
If it’s useful to the organizations using volunteers to support their missions.
This is a both/and - we can’t have one without the other. So we’re building both simultaneously - creating something that is hopefully useful to the general public who want to defend abortion access and to the organizations doing the work. If it doesn’t work on either side, then it doesn’t work.
