Why Abortion Still Matters

In the era of ICE raids, rising health insurance costs, and SNAP benefits being held for political purposes, it can be hard to know why we still keep talking about abortion.

But the truth of the matter is, abortion access is at the epicenter of many of these fights. The right to abortion is, fundamentally, a right to bodily autonomy. Bodily autonomy includes the right to make decisions about what happens within and outside of your body - whether that means the food you get to eat, the medical treatment you receive, or if armed forces can cause car accidents to detain residents.

Reproductive justice takes that one step further - insisting that people deserve the right to have and raise children freely and safely. Accessible abortion, sexual heath, childcare, food, housing, education, clean air and water, livable incomes - all of these things are required to be able to live a healthy life, and reproductive justice asks us to consider it all, not just a part.

So then back to the original question - why do we keep talking about abortion?

Because when you fight for abortion, you are fighting ICE. You are demanding that people deserve the lives they want to have and build. You are standing with your friends, family, and colleagues saying, we all get to make our own choices about our bodies and our wellbeing. As much as the state may try to stop it, we’re not going anywhere.

The Abortion Mobilization Project was built because we know that people want to help and want to find out how.

Every bit helps. Every voice matters. Add yours.
